Sacred Hadith 1

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

When Allah decreed the Creation He pledged Himself by writing in His book which is laid down with Him, “My mercy prevails over my wrath.”

[Sahih Bukhari, Book 54, Number 416]

Sacred Hadith 2

Ibn Abbas reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Allah Almighty has said:

Allah the Exalted said: The son of Adam has lied against Me but he has no right to do so, and he has abused Me but he has no right to do so. As for his lie, it is his saying that I cannot recreate him as I did before; and as for his abuse, it is his saying that I have a son, but glorified am I above taking a wife or a son.

[Sahih Bukhari, Book 60, Number 9]

Sacred Hadith 3

Zayd ibn Khalid al-Juhaniyy reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, led the morning prayer for us at al-Hudaybiyah following rainfall during the night. When the Prophet finished, he faced the people and said to them:

Do you know what your Lord has said?

They said, “Allah and his Messenger know best.” He said:

This morning one of my servants became a believer in Me and one a disbeliever. As for him who said, “We have been given rain by virtue of Allah and His mercy,” that one is a believer in Me, a disbeliever in the stars; and as for him who said, “We have been given rain by such-and-such a star,” that one is a disbeliever in Me, a believer in the stars.

[Sahih Muslim, Book 1, Number 132]

Sacred Hadith 4

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Allah the Almighty said:

The son of Adam curses time but I am time, for in my Hand are the night and day.

[Sahih Muslim, Book 27, Number 5580]

Sacred Hadith 5

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Allah Almighty said:

Allah the Exalted said: Indeed, I am self-sufficient, in need of no partner. Whoever performs a deed in which he associates something else with me, I will leave him to his partner.

[Sahih Muslim, Book 42, Number 7114]

Sacred Hadith 6

Abu Huraira reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say:

Indeed, the first of people to have their case judged on the Day of Resurrection will be a man who was martyred. He will be brought and Allah’s blessings will be made known and he will recognize them. Allah will say: What have you done concerning these blessings? The man will say: I fought in your cause until I was martyred. Allah will say: You have lied because you fought so that it would be said how courageous you are, and it was said. Then Allah will order him to be dragged upon his face into the Hellfire. Another man learned religious knowledge, taught others, and recited the Quran. He will be brought and Allah’s blessings will be made known and he will recognize them. Allah will say: What have you done concerning these blessings? The man will say: I learned religious knowledge, taught others, and I recited the Quran for Your sake. Allah will say: You have lied because you learned religious knowledge so that it would be said you are a scholar and you recited the Quran so that it would be said you are a reciter, and it was said. Then Allah will order him to be dragged upon his face into the Hellfire. Another man was given an abundance from Allah and was given every kind of wealth. He will be brought and Allah’s blessings will be made known and he will recognize them. Allah will say: What have you done concerning these blessings? The man will say: I spent money in every cause upon which You wished it to be spent. Allah will say: You have lied because you spent money so that it would be said how generous you are, and it was said. Then Allah will order him to be dragged upon his face into the Hellfire.

[Sahih Muslim, Book 20, Number 4688]

Sacred Hadith 7

Uqbah ibn Amir reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say:

Your Lord delights at a shepherd who, on the peak of a mountain crag, gives the call to prayer and prays. Then Allah, glorified and exalted is He, will say, “Look at this servant of Mine, he gives the call to prayer and performs the prayers; he is in awe of Me. I have forgiven My servant for his sins and have admitted him to Paradise.”

[Sunan An-Nasa’i, Book of the Call to Prayer, Number 666]

Sacred Hadith 8

Abu Huraira reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

A prayer performed by someone who has not recited the foundation of the Quran (surah al-fatihah) during it is deficient, incomplete.

He repeated these words three times. Someone said to Abu Hurairah, “Even though we are behind the Imam?” He said: Recite it to yourself, for I have heard the Messenger of Allah say:

Allah, Mighty and Exalted is He, had said, “I have divided prayer between Myself and My servant into two halves, and My servant shall have what he has asked for. When the servant says: Praise be to Allah Lord of the Worlds, Allah says, “My servant has praised Me.” And when he says: The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, Allah says, “My servant has extolled Me,” and when he says: Master of the Day of Judgment, Allah says, “My servant has glorified Me” – and on one occasion He said, “My servant has submitted to My power.” And when he says: You alone we worship, You alone we ask for help, Allah says, “This is between Me and My servant, and My servant shall have what he has asked for.” And when he says: Guide us to the straight path, the path of those whom you have favored, not those who went astray, Allah says, “This is for My servant, and My servant shall have what he has asked for.”

[Sahih Muslim, Book 4, Number 775]

Sacred Hadith 9

Huraith Ibn Qabisa reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Allah Almighty says:

The first actions for which a servant of Allah will be held accountable on the Day of Resurrection will be his prayers. If they are in order, then he will have prospered and succeeded; but if they are lacking, then he will have failed and lost. If there is something defective in his obligatory prayers then the Lord the Exalted will say: see if My servant has any extra prayers which can complete what is defective in his obligatory prayers. Then the rest of his actions will be judged in the same way.

[Sunan At-Tirmidhi, Book of Prayer, Number 413]

Sacred Hadith 10

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Allah the Exalted says:

All the deeds of the children of Adam are for them, except fasting which is for Me, and I will give the reward for it.

The Messenger of Allah said further:

Fasting is a shield from the fire and from sin. If one of you is fasting, he should avoid sexual relations with his wife and arguments. If somebody should fight or argue with him, he should say, “I am fasting.” By Him in Whose Hand is my soul, the unpleasant smell coming from the mouth of a fasting person is better in the sight of Allah than the smell of musk. There are two pleasures for the fasting person, one at the time of breaking his fast and the other when he meets his Lord; then he will be pleased because of his fasting.

Sacred Hadith 11

Abu Huraira reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Allah Almighty said:

Spend on charity, O son of Adam, and I shall spend on you.

[Sahih Bukhari, Book 64, Number 264]

Sacred Hadith 12

Abu Mas’ud al-Ansari reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

A man from the time before you was called to account and nothing good was found with him except that he was easy-going in his business with people and he would order his servants to be lenient with those in difficult circumstances. Allah the Exalted said: We are more worthy of such actions, so pardon his sins.

[Sahih Muslim, Book 10, Number 3792]

Sacred Hadith 13

Adiyy ibn Hatim reported: I was with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and there came to him two men: one of them was complaining of poverty, while the other was complaining of robbery. The Messenger of Allah said:

As for the obstruction of the roads, it will not be long until a caravan will travel to Mecca without any guard. As for poverty, the Hour will not be established until one of you goes out looking to give charity but will find no one to accept it. Each one of you will stand in front of Allah without a barrier or interpreter between him and Allah. Allah will ask: Did I not give you wealth? He will say yes. Allah will ask: Did I not send you a messenger? He will say yes. Then he will look to his right and see nothing but Hellfire, and he will look to his left and see nothing but Hellfire. Therefore, any one of you should save himself from the Fire by giving even a half of a date in charity, and if you do not have it then say a kind word.

[Sahih Bukhari, Book 24, Number 494]

Sacred Hadith 14

Abu Huraira reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Verily, Allah the Blessed and Exalted has caravans of angels who have no other work but to follow assemblies of remembrance. When they find such assemblies in which there is remembrance, they sit with them and some of them surround the others with their wings until the space between them and the heaven is covered. When they disperse, they ascend to the heaven and Allah the Exalted asks them – although he is best informed about them: From where have you come? They say: We came from Your servants on earth who were glorifying You, declaring Your greatness and oneness, praising You and asking from You. Allah will say: What do they ask from Me? They say: They ask You for Your Paradise. Allah will say: Have they seen My Paradise? They say: No, our Lord. Allah will say: What if they were to see My Paradise? They say: They seek Your protection. Allah will say: From what do they seek My protection? They say: Our Lord, from the Hellfire. Allah will say: Have they seen My Hellfire? They say: No. Allah will say: What if they were to see My Hellfire? They say: They ask for Your forgiveness. Allah will say: I will pardon them, give them what they ask, and grant them protection. They say: Our Lord, there is one among them, a simple servant who happened to pass by and sat there alongside them. Allah will say: I also grant him pardon , for whoever sits with these fellows will not suffer.

[Sahih Muslim, Book 35, Number 6505]

Sacred Hadith 15

Abu Huraira reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, said: I am as My servant expects Me and I am with him as he remembers Me. By Allah, Allah is more pleased with the repentance of His servant than how one of you would be on finding the lost camel in the waterless desert. When he draws near Me by the span of his hand, I draw near him by the length of a cubit. And when he draws near Me by the length of a cubit, I draw near him by the length of a fathom. And when he draws near Me walking, I draw close to him quickly.

[Sahih Muslim, Book 37, Number 6610]

Sacred Hadith 16

Ibn Abbas reported:  Among the sayings of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, that he related from his Lord Almighty is that he said:

Indeed, Allah has recorded good and bad deeds and He made them clear. Whoever intends to perform a good deed but does not do it, then Allah will record it as a complete good deed, but if he intends to do it and does so, then Allah the Exalted will record it as ten good deeds up to seven hundred times as much or even more; if he intends to do a bad deed and does not do it, then Allah will record for him one complete good deed, but if he does it then Allah will record for him a single bad deed.

[Sahih Muslim, Book 1, Number 237]

Sacred Hadith 17

Abu Dharr al-Ghifari reported: Among the sayings of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, that he related from his Lord Almighty is that he said:

O My servants, I have forbidden oppression for Myself and have made it forbidden amongst you, so do not oppress one another. O My servants, all of you are astray except for those I have guided, so seek guidance of Me and I shall guide you. O My servants, all of you are hungry except for those I have fed, so seek food of Me and I shall feed you. O My servants, all of you are naked except for those I have clothed, so seek clothing of Me and I shall clothe you. O My servants, you sin by night and by day, and I forgive all sins, so seek forgiveness of Me and I shall forgive you. O My servants, you will not attain harming Me so as to harm Me, and you will not attain benefiting Me so as to benefit Me. O My servants, were the first of you and the last of you, the human of you and the jinn of you to be as pious as the most pious heart of any one man of you, that would not increase My kingdom in anything. O My servants, were the first of you and the last of you, the human of you and the jinn of you to be as wicked as the most wicked heart of any one man of you, that would not decrease My kingdom in anything. O My servants, were the first of you and the last of you, the human of you and the jinn of you to rise up in one place and make a request of Me, and were I to give everyone what he requested, that would not decrease what I have, any more than a needle decreases the sea if put into it. O My servants, it is but your deeds that I reckon up for you and then recompense you for, so let him who finds good praise Allah and let him who finds other than that blame no one but himself.

Sacred Hadith 18

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Allah Almighty will say on the Day of Resurrection:

Allah the Exalted will say on the Day of Resurrection: O son of Adam, I was sick but you did not visit Me. He will say: O my Lord, how can I visit You when You are the Lord of the worlds? Allah will say: Did you not know that such-and-such servant of Mine was sick and you did not visit him, and had you visited him you would have found Me with him? O son of Adam, I asked you for food but you did not feed me. He will say: My Lord, how can I feed You when You are the Lord of the worlds? Allah will say: Did you not know that such-and-such servant of Mine asked you for food but you did not feed him, and had you fed him you would have found Me with him? O son of Adam, I asked you for drink but you did not provide for Me. He will say: My Lord, how can I give You when You are the Lord of the worlds? Allah will say: Such-and-such servant of Mine asked you for a drink but you did not provide for him, and had you given it to him you would have found Me with him.

Sacred Hadith 19

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Allah the Almighty said: Pride is My cloak and greatness is My garment;  so whoever competes with Me regarding these two will be thrown into the Hellfire.

Sacred Hadith 20

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

The gates of Paradise are opened on two days, Monday and Thursday. Allah forgives every servant who does not associate anything with him except the person in whose heart is rancor against his brother. It will be said: look to these until they reconcile, look to these until they reconcile, look to these until they reconcile.

Sacred Hadith 21

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Allah said: There are three persons whom I will oppose on the Day of Resurrection: a man who gives his word by Me but proves treacherous; a man who sells a free person and consumes the price; and a man who employs a worker and receives a completed job but he does not pay him his wages.

Sacred Hadith 22

Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri  reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Let not one of you belittle himself.

They said, “O Messenger of Allah, how can any one of us belittle himself?” He said:

He finds a matter regarding Allah about which he should speak up but he does not. Allah the Exalted will say to him on the Day of Resurrection: What prevented you from speaking up about such-and-such? He will say: It was out of fear of the people. Allah will say: Rather, it is I who deserves to be feared.

Sacred Hadith 24

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Verily, if Allah has loved a servant, He calls Gabriel, upon him be peace, and says, “I love so-and-so, therefore love him.” So Gabriel loves him. Then he calls out in heaven, saying, “Allah loves so-and-so, therefore love him.” And the inhabitants of heaven love him. Then acceptance is established for him on earth. And if Allah has disliked a servant, He calls Gabriel and says, “I dislike so-and-so, therefore dislike him.” So Gabriel dislikes him. Then Gabriel calls out to the inhabitants of heaven, “Allah dislikes so-and-so, therefore dislike him.” So they dislike him, and abhorrence is established for him on earth.

Sacred Hadith 25

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Allah Almighty said:

Whosoever shows enmity to someone devoted to Me, I shall be at war with him. My servant draws not near to Me with anything more loved by Me than the religious duties I have enjoined upon him, and My servant continues to draw near to Me with supererogatory works so that I shall love him. When I love him I am his hearing with which he hears, his seeing with which he sees, his hand with which he strikes and his foot with which he walks. Were he to ask [something] of Me, I would surely give it to him, and were he to ask Me for refuge, I would surely grant him it. I do not hesitate about anything as much as I hesitate about seizing the soul of My faithful servant: he hates death and I hate hurting him.

Sacred Hadith 26

Abu Umamah reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Allah Almighty said:

Verily, the one most devoted to Me whom I favor is a believer of simple means and given to prayer, who has been excellent in the worship of his Lord and has obeyed him in secret, who was obscure among the people and not famous, whose sustenance was barely sufficient yet he bore this patiently.

Then the Prophet rapped his hand and he said:

Death will have come early to him, his mourners will have been few, his estate scant.

Sacred Hadith 27

Masruq reported: We asked Abdullah ibn Mas’ud about this verse:

Do not regard those who have been killed in the cause of Allah as dead, rather are they alive with their Lord, being provided for.

[Surah Ali Imran 3:169]

He said: We asked about that and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

The souls of martyrs are alive in the bodies of green birds who have their nests in chandeliers hanging from the Throne of the Almighty. They eat the fruits of Paradise from wherever they wish and they nestle among these chandeliers. Once their Lord cast a glance at them and He said: Do you want anything? They said: What more could we desire? We eat the fruit of Paradise from wherever we wish; Their Lord asked them the same question three times. When they saw that they will continue to be asked, they said: O Lord, we wish that You could return our souls to our bodies so that we could be killed in Your way once again. When Allah saw that they had no needs, He left them to enjoy.

[Sahih Muslim, Book 20, Number 4651]

Sacred Hadith 28

Jundub ibn Abdullah reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

There was a man among those before you who had a wound; he was in such anguish that he took a knife and he slit his hand with it and the blood did not cease to flow until he died. Allah the Almighty said: My servant has himself forestalled Me, so I have forbidden Paradise for him.

Sacred Hadith 30

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Whoever loves to meet Allah, Allah loves to meet him; and whoever hates to meet Allah, Allah hates to meet him.

Aishah said, “O Prophet of Allah, is it because of the dislike of death? For all of us dislike death.” He said:

It is not like this, rather when a believer is given the glad tidings of the mercy of Allah, His pleasure, and Paradise, then he loves to meet Allah and Allah loves to meet him; and when a disbeliever is given news of the punishment at the Hand of Allah and hardship to be imposed by Him, he hates to meet Allah and Allah hates to meet him.

Sacred Hadith 32

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

A man sinned greatly against himself, and when death came to him he charged his sons, saying, “When I have died, burn me, then crush me and scatter my ashes into the sea, for, by Allah, if my Lord takes possession of me, He will punish me in a manner in which He has punished no one else.” So they did that to him. Then He said to the earth, “Produce what you have taken – and there he was!” And He said to him, “What induced you to do what you did?” He said, “Being afraid of You, O my Lord,” and because of that Allah forgave him.

A servant committed a sin and he said: O Allah, forgive my sin! Allah the Blessed and Exalted will say: My servant has committed a sin and he knows he has a Lord who forgives sins and holds him accountable. Then he returned to his sin and he said: O Allah, forgive my sin!  Allah will say: My servant has committed a sin and he knows he has a Lord who forgives sins and holds him accountable. Then he returned to his sin and he said: O Allah, forgive my sin! Anas ibn Malik reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: Allah the Almighty said:

O son of Adam, however much you call upon Me and place your hopes in Me, I will forgive you without any reservation. O son of Adam, if you have sins piling up to the clouds and then ask My forgiveness, I will forgive you without any reservation. O son of Adam, if you come to me with enough mistakes to fill the earth, and meet Me without associating anything as a partner with Me, I will come to you with enough forgiveness to fill the earth.

Sacred Hadith 35

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Our Lord descends to the heaven on the last third of every night, and He says: Who is calling upon Me that I may answer him? Who is asking from Me that I may give him? Who is seeking My forgiveness that I may forgive him?

[Sahih Bukhari, Book 21, Number 246]

Sacred Hadith 36

Anas ibn Malik reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

The believers will gather together on the Day of Resurrection and will say, “Should we not ask someone to intercede for us with our Lord?” So they will come to Adam and will say, “You are the Father of mankind. Allah created you with His Hand, He made His angels bow down to you, and He taught you the names of everything, so intercede for us with your Lord so that He may give us relief from this place where we are.” Adam will say, “I am not in a position to do that,” – and he will mention his wrongdoing and will feel ashamed and will say, “Go to Noah, for he is the first messenger that Allah sent to the inhabitants of the earth.” So they will come to him and Noah will say, “I am not in a position to do that,” – and he will mention his having requested something of his Lord about which he had no proper] knowledge [see verses 11:45-46], and he will feel ashamed and will say, “Go to the Friend of the Merciful.” So they will come to him and Abraham will say, “I am not in a position to do that. Go to Moses, a servant to whom Allah talked and to whom He gave the Torah.” So they will come to him and Moses will say, “I am not in a position to do that,” – and he will mention the talking of a life other than for a life [see verses 28:15-16], and he will feel ashamed in the sight of his Lord and will say, “Go to Jesus, Allah’s servant and messenger, Allah’s word and spirit.” So they will come to him and Jesus will say, “I am not in a position to do that. Go to Muhammad, peace be upon him, a servant to whom Allah has forgiven all his wrongdoing, past and future.” So they will come to me and I shall set forth to ask permission to come to my Lord, and permission will be given, and when I shall see my Lord I shall prostrate myself. He will leave me thus for such time as it pleases Him, and then it will be said to me, “Raise your head. Ask and it will be granted. Speak and it will be heard. Intercede and your intercession will be accepted.” So I shall raise my head and praise Him with a form of praise that He will teach me. Then I shall intercede and He will set me a limit, so I shall admit them into Paradise. Then I shall return to Him, and when I shall see my Lord I shall bow down as before. Then I shall intercede and He will set me a limit, so I shall admit them into Paradise. Then I shall return for a third time, then a fourth, and I shall say, “There remains in Hellfire only those whom the Quran has confined and who must be there for eternity.” There shall come out of Hellfire he who has said, “There is no god but Allah,” and who has in his heart goodness weighing of a barley corn; then there shall come out of Hellfire he who has said, “There is no god but Allah,” and who has in his heart goodness weighing a grain of wheat; then there shall come out of Hellfire he who has said, “There is no god but Allah,” and who has in his heart goodness weighing an atom.

Sacred Hadith 37

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Allah the Glorified and Exalted said: I have prepared for My righteous servants what no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and has not crossed the mind of men, but it is testified by Allah.

[Sahih Muslim, Book 40, Number 6780]

Then he recited the verse:

No soul knows what joy for them has been kept hidden.

[Surah As-Sajda 32:17]

Sacred Hadith 38

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

When Allah created Paradise and Hellfire, He sent Gabriel to Paradise, saying, “Look at it and at what I have prepared therein for its inhabitants.” So Gabriel came to it and looked at it and at what Allah had prepared therein for its inhabitants. He returned to Him and said, “By your glory, no one hears of it without entering it.” So He ordered that it be encompassed by forms of hardship, and He said, “Return to it and look at what I have prepared therein for its inhabitants.” So Gabriel returned to it and found that it was encompassed by forms of hardship. Then he returned to Allah and said, “By Your glory, I fear that no one will enter it.” Allah said, “Go to Hellfire and look at it and what I have prepared therein for its inhabitants.” Gabriel found that it was in layers, one above the other. Then he returned to Allah and said, “By Your glory, no one who hears of it will enter it.” So Allah ordered that it be encompassed by lusts. Then He said, “Return to it,” and Gabriel returned to it and said, “By Your glory, I am frightened that no one will escape from entering it.”

It was related by Tirmidhi, who said that it was a good and sound Hadith (also by Abu Dawud and an-Nasa’i).

Sacred Hadith 39

Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri reproted: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Paradise and Hellfire disputed together, and Hellfire said, “In me are the mighty and the haughty.” Paradise said, “In me are the weak and the poor.” So Allah judged between them, saying, “You are Paradise, My mercy, through you I show mercy to those I wish; and you are Hellfire, My punishment, through you I punish those I wish, and it is incumbent upon Me that each of you shall have its fill.”

It was related by Muslim (also by al-Bukhari and at-Tirmidhi).

Sacred Hadith 40

Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Allah will say to the inhabitant of Paradise, “O inhabitants of Paradise!” They will say, “O our Lord, we present ourselves and are at Your pleasure, and goodness rests in Your hands.” Allah will say, “Are you content?” They will say, “How should we not be content, O Lord, when You have given to us that which You have given to no one else of Your creation?” Allah will say, “Would you not like Me to give you something better than that?” Allah will say, “O Lord, what could be better than that?” Allah will say, “I shall cause My favor to descend upon you and thereafter shall never be displeased with you.”

It was related by al-Bukhari (also by Muslim and at-Tirmidhi).

Forty Hadith Nawawi – English and Arabic

Hadith 1: Intention (an-Niyyah)

Umar ibn Al-Khattab reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say:

Verily, deeds are only with intentions. Indeed, every person will get rewarded only for what they intended. Therefore, whoever emigrated for worldly reasons or for a woman, then his emigration is for what he has emigrated to.

[Sahih Bukhari, Book 1, Number 1]

Hadith 2: Foundation of the Sunnah

Umar ibn Al-Khattab reported: One day while we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah there appeared before us a man whose clothes were exceedingly white and whose hair was exceedingly black; no signs of journeying were to be seen on him and none of us knew him. He walked up and sat down by the prophet. Resting his knees against his and placing the palms of his hands on his thighs, he said, “O Muhammad, tell me about Islam.” The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Islam is to worship Allah alone without associating anything with Him, to establish the prescribed prayer, to give obligatory charity, and to fast the month of Ramadan.

The man said: “You have spoken rightly,” and we were amazed at him asking him and saying that he had spoken rightly. Then he said: “Tell me about faith.” The Prophet said:

Faith (al-Iman) is to believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His meeting (on the Day of Judgment), His messengers, and to believe in the resurrection in the Hereafter.

The man said, “You have spoken rightly. Then tell me about excellence.” The Prophet said:

Excellence (al-Ihsan)  is to worship Allah as if you see Him, for verily, He sees you.

The man said, “Then tell me about the Hour.” The Prophet said:

The one who is asked does not know more than the one asking.

The man said, “Then tell me about its signs.” The Prophet said:

When the slave-girl gives birth to her master is among its signs; when the naked and barefooted will become chiefs of the people is among its signs; when the shepherds of black camels will exult themselves in constructing building is among its signs.

Then he left and I stayed for a time. Then the Prophet said:

O Umar, do you know who the questioner was?

I said, “Allah and His messenger know best.” He said:

He was Gabriel, who came to teach the people their religion.

[Sahih Muslim, Book 1, Number 1]

Hadith 3: Pillars of Islam

Ibn Umar, the son of Umar ibn Al-Khattab, reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Islam is built upon five: worshiping Allah alone and disbelieving in what is worshiped besides him, establishing prayer, paying charity, performing the pilgrimage, and fasting the month of Ramadan.

[Sahih Bukhari, Book 2, Number 8]

Hadith 4: Divine Providence (al-Qadr)

Abdullah ibn Masud reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and he is the truthful, the trusted,  said to us:

Verily, the creation of each one of you is brought together in his mother’s womb for forty days in the form of seed, then he is a clot of blood for another period, then a morsel of flesh for another period, then there is sent to him the angel who blows the breath of life into him and who is commanded regarding four matters: to write down his means of livelihood, his life span, his actions, and whether he is happy or unhappy. By Allah other than whom there is no god, verily, one of you behaves like the people of Paradise until he is but an arm’s length from it, but that which has been written overtakes him, so he behaves like the people of Hellfire and thus he enters it; and one of you behaves like the people of Hellfire until he is but an arm’s length from it, and that which has been written overtakes him, so he behaves like the people of Paradise and thus he enters it.

[Sahih Muslim, Book 33, Number 6390]

Hadith 5: Religious Innovation and Heresy (al-Bid’ah)

Aisha reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said:

Whoever innovates something into this affair of ours which does not belong to it will have it rejected.

[Sahih Bukhari, Book 49, Number 861]

In another narration, the Prophet said:

Whoever performs a deed that is not in accordance with our matter will have it rejected.

[Sahih Muslim, Book 18, Number 4266]

Hadith 6: Lawful and Unlawful (Halal wal Haram)

Numan ibn Bashir reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say:

That which is lawful is plain and that which is unlawful is plain and between the two of them are doubtful matters about which not many people know. Thus he who avoids doubtful matters clears himself in regard to his religion and his honor, but he who falls into doubtful matters falls into that which is unlawful, like the shepherd who pastures around a sanctuary, all but grazing therein. Truly every king has a sanctuary, and truly Allah’s sanctuary is His prohibitions. Truly in the body there is a morsel of flesh which, if it be whole, all the body is whole and which, if it be diseased, all of it is diseased. Truly it is the heart.

[Sahih Bukhari, Book 2, Number 50]

Hadith 7: Religion is Sincerity (an-Naseehah)

Tamim Al-Dari reported: The Prophet, peace be upon him, said three times:

Verily, the religion is sincerity.

We said, “To whom?” He said:

To Allah and His Book, and His messenger, and to the leaders of the Muslims and their common folk.

[Sahih Muslim, Book 1, Number 98]

Hadith 8: Fighting in Defense of Islam (al-Jihad)

Abdullah ibn Umar reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

I have been ordered to fight against people until they testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah and until they perform the prayers and pay charity, and if they do so they will have gained protection from me for their lives and property, unless [they do acts that are punishable] in accordance with Islam, and their reckoning will be with Allah the Almighty.

[Sahih Muslim, Book 1, Number 33]

In another narration, the Prophet said:

I have been commanded to fight the idolaters…

[Sunan An-Nasa’i, Book of Unlawfulness of Bloodshed, Number 3966, Sahih]

Ibn Taymiyah comments on this tradition, saying:

It refers to fighting those who are waging war, whom Allah has permitted us to fight. It does not refer to those who have a covenant with us, whom Allah commands us to fulfill our covenant.

[Majmu’ Al-Fatawa 19/20]

Hadith 9: Avoid Excessive Questioning

Abu Huraira reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say:

Avoid what I have forbidden for you, and do what I have commanded you as much as you are able. Verily, the people before you were destroyed only because of their excessive questioning and contradicting their prophets.

[Sahih Muslim, Book 30, Number 5818]

In another narration, the Prophet said:

Leave me with what I have left you. When I narrate a saying to you, then take it from me. Indeed, the people before you were destroyed only because of their excessive questioning and disagreeing with their prophets.

[Sunan At-Tirmidhi, Book of Knowledge, Number 2679, Sahih]

Hadith 10: Allah is Pure and Accepts Only Pure

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

O people, verily, Allah is pure and He accepts only what is pure. Verily, Allah has commanded the believers with that which He commanded His Messengers. He said: O Messengers, eat from good things and work righteousness, for indeed I am knowing of what you do(23:51); and He said: O you who believe, eat from good things with which We have provided you.” (2:172)

Abu Huraira added:

Then he mentioned the case of a man who, having traveled very far, becomes disheveled and dusty and he raises his hands to the sky, saying, “O Lord! O Lord!” while his food is unlawful, his drink is unlawful, his clothing is unlawful, and he is nourished with the unlawful, so how can he be answered?

[Sahih Muslim, Book 5, Number 2214]

Hadith 11: Leave Doubts

Al-Hasan ibn Ali, the grandson of the Messenger of Allah, reported: I memorized from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, the saying:

Leave what makes you doubt to what does not make you doubt; verily, truth brings tranquility but falsehood brings doubts.

Hadith 12: Minding Our Own Business

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

It is part of a person’s excellence in Islam that he leaves what does not concern him.

Hadith 13: Love Good For All Creation

Anas ibn Malik reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

None of you believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.

[Sahih Bukhari, Book 2, Number 15]

In another narration, the Prophet said:

By Him in whose Hand is my soul, a servant does not believe until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself of goodness.”

[Musnad Ahmad, Number 12734, Sahih]

In another narration, the Prophet said:

None of you has faith until he loves for the people what he loves for himself, and until he loves a person only for the sake of Allah the Exalted.

[Musnad Ahmad, Number 13463, Hasan]

In another narration, the Prophet said:

Love for people what you would love for yourself, and hate for people what you would hate for yourself.

[Musnad Ahmad, Number 15453, Hasan]

In another narration, the Prophet said:

Whoever would love to be delivered from the Fire and entered into Paradise, then let him die with faith in Allah and the Last Day, and let him treat the people the way he would love to be treated.

[Sahih Muslim, Book 20, Number 4546]

An-Nawawi comments on this Hadith:

It is better to interpret this as brotherhood in general, such that it includes the disbeliever and the Muslim. So he should love for his brother, the disbeliever, what he loves for himself which is his entering Islam, just as he should love for his brother Muslim that he remains in Islam. For this reason, it is recommended to supplicate for the disbeliever to be guided. The meaning of love here is an intention for good and benefit, and this meaning is religious love, not human love.

[Sharh Arba’een An-Nawawi, Hadith Number 13]

Ibn Rajab comments on this Hadith:

Some of the righteous predecessors said: The people who love Allah look by the light of Allah, and they are compassionate with those who disobey Allah. They hate their actions but show mercy to them so that through their admonitions they might leave their actions. They are afraid that the Hellfire will consume their bodies. The believer will not truly be a believer until he is pleased for people to have what he is pleased for himself. If he sees in someone else some merit by which they excel him, then he wishes the like of it for himself. If that merit is related to the religion then it is good.

[Ibn Rajab, Jami’ Ulum wal-Hikam]

Hadith 14: Legal Punishment

Abdullah ibn Mas’ud reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

It is unlawful to shed the blood of a Muslim person who testifies that there is no God but Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah except in one of three cases: the married person who commits adultery, legal retaliation for murder, and a person who leaves their religion and divides the community.

[Sahih Muslim, Book 16, Number 4152]

In another narration, the apostate is described as:

A man who goes out for war against Allah and His Messenger.

[Sunan Abu Dawud, Book of Legal Punishment, Number 4353, Sahih]

Hadith 15: Good Manners with Neighbors and Guests

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak goodness or be silent; and whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him honor his neighbor; and whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him honor his guest.

Hadith 17: Excellence in All Things

Shaddad ibn Aws reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Verily Allah has prescribed excellence in all things. Thus, if you kill, kill well; and if you slaughter, slaughter well. Let each one of you sharpen his blade and let him spare suffering to the animal he slaughters.

Hadith 19: Be Mindful of Allah

Ibn Abbas reported: One day I was behind the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and he said to me:

O boy, I will teach you some words. Be mindful of Allah and He will protect you. Be mindful of Allah and you will find Him before you. When you ask, ask from Allah; and when you seek help, seek help from Allah. Know that if the entire creation were to gather together to benefit you, then would not benefit you except if Allah willed. And if the entire creation gathered together to harm you, they would not harm you except if Allah willed. The pens have been raised and the pages dried.

Hadith 21: Uprightness

Hadith 22: Essentials of Salvation

Jabir ibn Abdullah reported: A man asked the Messenger of Allah, “Do you think that if I perform the obligatory prayers, fast in Ramadan, treat as lawful that which is lawful and treat as forbidden that which is forbidden, and do nothing further, I shall enter Paradise?” The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Yes.

[Sahih Muslim, Book 1, Number 9]

In another narration, the Prophet said:

Hadith 23: Purification is Half of Faith

Abu Malik Al-Ashari reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Purity is half of faith and the praise of Allah fills the scale, glorification and praise fill up what is between the heavens and the earth, and prayer is a light, and charity is proof (of sincere faith), and patience is illumination, and the Quran is a proof for you or against you. All people go out early in the morning and sell themselves, either setting themselves free or destroying themselves.

Hadith 24: Allah Has Forbidden Oppression

Abu Dharr Al-Ghafari reported: Among the sayings the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, relates from his Lord is that Allah Almighty said:

O My servants, I have forbidden oppression for Myself and have made it forbidden among you, so do not oppress one another.

O my servants, were the first of you and the last of you, the human of you and the jinn of you to become as pious as the most pious heart of any one man of you, that would not increase My kingdom in anything.

O My servants, it is but your deeds that I reckon up for you and then recompense you for, so let him who finds good praise Allah, and let him who finds other than that blame no one but himself.

[Sahih Muslim, Book 32, Number 6246]

Hadith 25: Many Ways to Give Charity

Abu Dharr reported: Some people from the companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, came to the Prophet and said, “O Messenger of Allah, the rich have taken the rewards. They perform prayer as we pray, they fast as we fast, and they give charity from their extra wealth.” He said:

Has not Allah made for you ways to give charity? In every glorification of Allah there is charity; and in every declaration of His greatness there is charity; and in praise of Him is charity; and in every declaration of His oneness there is charity; and enjoining good is charity and forbidding evil is charity; and in a man’s intimate relations with his wife is charity.

They said, “O Messenger of Allah, is there a reward for one who satisfies his passions?” He said:

You see if he were to devote himself to something forbidden it would be a sin; likewise, if he were to devote himself to something lawful, he will have a reward.

Hadith 26: Charity Due Upon Every Joint

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Hadith 27: Righteousness is Good Character

Al-Nawwas ibn Samaan reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Righteousness is to have good character and sin is what festers in your heart and you hate for people to know about it.

[Sahih Muslim, Book 32, Number 6195]

In another narration, the Prophet said:

Consult your soul, consult your heart, O Wabisa. Righteousness is what is satisfying to your soul and your heart. Sin is what wavers in your soul and causes hesitancy in your chest, even if the people give you a judgment, and again give you a judgment.

Hadith 28: Upholding the Sunnah

Al-‘Irbad ibn Sariyah reported: One day after prayer the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, admonished us such that the eyes wept and hearts shuddered. A man said, “Indeed, this is a farewell speech, so what do you order us, O Messenger of Allah?” He said:

I enjoin you to fear Allah, and to listen and obey your leaders even if he is a slave from Ethiopia. Indeed, whoever lives among you will see many differences. Beware of newly invented matters, for indeed they are misguidance. So whoever sees that must uphold my precedent (sunnah) and the precedent of the upright successors who are guided; bite onto it with you molar teeth.

Hadith 29: Virtuous Deeds

Mu’adh ibn Jabal reported: I was with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and we woke up one day and I said, “O Messenger of Allah, tell me about a deed that will enter me into Paradise and keep me away from the Fire.” He said:

You have asked about an enormous matter, yet it is easy for whom Allah makes it easy. Worship Allah and do not associate anything with Him; establish the prayer; give the charity; fast the month of Ramadan; and perform pilgrimage to the House.

Then he said:

Shall I not tell you about the gates of goodness? Fasting is a shield; charity extinguishes sins just as water extinguishes fire; and the prayer of a man in the late night.

Then he recited:

They arise from their beds; they supplicate their Lord in fear and hope, and they spend from what We have provided them, and no soul knows what has been hidden for them of comfort for eyes as reward for what they used to do.

[Surah As-Sajda 32:16-17]

Then he said:

Shall I not tell you about the head of the matter and its peak?

I said, “Of course, O Messenger of Allah.” He said:

The head of the matter is Islam; its pillar is the prayer; and struggle (jihad) is its peak.

Then he said:

Shall I not tell you how to achieve all of this?

I said, “Yes, O Messenger of Allah,” and he took hold of his tongue and said:

Restrain this.

I said, “O Prophet of Allah, will what we say be held against us?” He said:

May your mother be bereaved of you, O Mu’adh! Is there anything that topples people onto their faces in the Hellfire except the harvest of their tongues?

Hadith 30: Duties, Limits, and Allah’s Merciful Silence

Abu Tha’laba Al-Khushani reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Verily, Allah has made duties obligatory, so do not neglect them; and He has set limits, so do not transgress them; and He has remained silent concerning things as mercy for you, not out of forgetfulness, so do not search them out.

[Sunan Al-Daraqutani, Number 4316, Hasan]

Hadith 31: Renounce the World and Allah Will Love You

Sahl ibn Sa’ad Al-Sa’di reported: A man came to the Prophet and said, “O Messenger of Allah, tell me about a deed I can do which will make Allah and the people love me.” The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Renounce the world and Allah will love you, and renounce what people possess and the people will love you.

Hadith 32: No Being Harmed or Harming Others

Sa’d bin Malik Al-Khudari reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, made a decree:

Do not be harmed or harm others.

Hadith 33: Burden of Proof is Upon the Claimant

Ibn Abbas reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

If people were given in accordance with their claims, then men would claim the wealth and lives of other people; rather, the burden of proof is on the claimant, and the taking of an oath is an obligation upon him who denies the claim.

Hadith 34: Enjoining Good and Forbidding Evil

Abu Sa’eed Al-Khudri reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Whoever among you sees something wrong should change it with his hands. If he is unable to do so, then with his tongue. If he is unable to do so, then at least hate it in his heart, and that is the weakest of faith.

[Sahih Muslim, Book 1, Number 79]

Al-Barbahari comments on this Hadith:

Enjoining good and forbidding evil is with the hand, the tongue, and the heart, not with the sword.

[Sharh As-Sunnah 129]

Ibn Rajab comments on this Hadith:

Changing something with one’s hand does not necessarily entail fighting, and Ahmad also stated that in a version narrated from him by Salih. He said, “Changing things with one’s hand is not done with swords or weapons…” Ahmad said, “Do not oppose the ruler, because his sword is unsheathed.”

[Ibn Rajb, Jami’ Ulum wal-Hikam]

Hadith 35: Manners of Brotherhood

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Do not envy, and do not outbid each other, and do not hate, and do not turn away, and do not outsell each other, and be servants of Allah as brothers. The Muslim is the brother of another Muslim. He does not wrong him or humiliate him or look down upon him. Righteousness is here, and he pointed to his chest three times. It is sufficient evil for a person to look down upon his brother Muslim. All of the Muslim is sacred to another Muslim: his life, his wealth, and his honor.

[Sahih Muslim, Book 32, Number 6219]

Hadith 36: Allah Helps Him Who Helps His Brother

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

He who relieves the hardship of a believer in this world, Allah will relieve his hardship on the Day of Judgment. He who makes easy what is difficult, Allah will make it easy for him in the world and the Hereafter. He who conceals the faults of a Muslim, Allah will conceal his faults in the world and the Hereafter. Allah helps the servant so long as he helps his brother. He who travels a path in search of knowledge, Allah will make easy a path to Paradise. A people do not gather together in the houses of Allah, reciting the Book of Allah and studying together, except that tranquility will descend upon them, mercy will cover them, angels will surround them, and Allah will mention them to those with Him. And he who is slow to good deeds will not be hastened by his lineage

[Sahih Muslim, Book 35, Number 6518]

Hadith 37: Recording of Good and Bad Deeds

Ibn Abbas reported: Among the sayings of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, that he relates from his Lord is:

Verily, Allah has recorded good and bad deeds and He made them clear. Whoever intends to perform a good deed but does not do it, then Allah will record it as a complete good deed, but if he intends to do it and does so, then Allah the Exalted will record it as ten good deeds up to seven hundred times as much or even more; if he intends to do a bad deed and does not do it, then Allah will record for him one complete good deed, but if he does it then Allah will record for him a single bad deed.”

[Sahih Muslim, Book 1, Number 237]

Hadith 38: Loyal Friends of Allah

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Verily, Allah Almighty said: Whoever shows hostility to a friend of mine, then I have declared war upon him. My servant does not grow closer to me with anything more beloved to Me than the duties I have imposed upon him. My servant continues to draw near me with extra works until I love him. When I love him, I am his hearing with which he hears, his seeing with which he sees, his hands with which he strikes, and his foot with which he walks. Were he to ask something from me, I would surely give it to him; and if he were to ask me for refuge, I would surely grant it to him.

Hadith 39: Pardon For Honest Mistakes

Abu Dharr Al-Ghifari reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Verily, Allah has pardoned my nation for their mistakes, their forgetfulness, and what they are coerced into doing.

Hadith 40: Be in the World as a Stranger

Abdullah ibn Umar reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, took hold of my shoulder and said:

Be in the world as though you were a stranger or a wayfarer.

[Sahih Bukhari, Book 76, Number 425]

Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, would say:

At evening do not expect to live till morning, and at morning do not expect to live till evening. Take from your health for your illness and from your life for your death.

Hadith 41: Desires and Islam

Abdullah ibn Amr reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

A believer will never perfect his faith until his desires follow what I have brought to you.

Hadith 42: Door of Repentance is Always Open

Anas reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say:

Allah, Blessed and Exalted, says: O son of Adam, however much you call upon Me and place your hopes in Me, I will forgive you without any reservation.

[Sunan At-Tirmidhi, Book 45, Number 3540, Hasan]

Sahih al-Bukhari (صحيح البخاري‎), as it is commonly referred to Hadith Sahih al-Bukhari, is one of the six canonical hadith collections of Sunni Islam. These prophetic traditions, or hadith, were collected by the Persian Muslim scholar Muhammad ibn Ismail al-Bukhari (810–870 AD) 194–256 H (about 200 years after Muhammad died) and compiled during his lifetime. Sunni Muslims view this as their most trusted collection of hadith and it is considered the most authentic book after the Qur’an. The Arabic word sahih translates as authentic or correct.

The single PDF link contains all of its Buhkari’s Hadith. The Hadith is separated into books or what we would call chapters. Each ahadith is numbered within each chapter.

Sunan Ibn Majah

In the Name of Allâh, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful

Ahadith began to be put down in writing even during the era of the Prophet (S), but these Ahadith were no better than compilations individuals. Their purpose was just to put them down in writing, with: regard for order or sequence. Later, during the caliphate of ‘Umar bin ‘Abdul-‘Aziz (99 AH-101 AH), the state undertook this task but most of the works in this field were the products of individual labor. During the second century of the Hijra calendar, famous books like Muwatta’ of Imam Malik and Musnad of Imam Shafi were prepared but the third stage recording Ahadith, known as the Golden Age, came only in the third century AH. Many collections were made in this age. These included the Six Books (Kutub Sittah), popularly known as the Sound Six (Sahah Sitta), Sunan of Ibn Majah being one of them and considered the last of them.

Sunan Ibn Majah began to be included in the Six Books by the end of the fifth century AH. Since then, in every succeeding age, it kept on growing value and importance. With respect to soundness and strength, Sunan Ad Darimi, Sunan Ad-Daraqutni and other books of Sunan were superior Sunan Ibn Majah but they did not gain popularity like Sunan Ibn Majah.

It is to be noted that Sunan is a technical term used by scholars of Had sciences to denote a book of Ahadith relating to legal rulings, from the Chapters of Purification down to the Chapter on Wills in the same order as followed in books of Islamic jurisprudence.

How important and useful the Sunan Ibn Majah is, can also be gauged the fact that when Ibn Majah showed his work to Imam Abu Zar’ah, the latter remarked: ‘If this book reached the public, all or most of the existing Jawami would cease to be used. The words of Imam Abu Zar’ah proved be true to the last letter. Several Jawami, Musnads and Sunan were eclipsed by Ibn Majah’s Sunan.

Hafiz Ibn Hajar termed the book Jami’ Jaiyid (a good, comprehensive Hadith collection).

The book, As-Sunan by Imam Ibn Majah was an excellent and beneficial work that stunned the scholars of his time.

He himself said about the book: “I showed this book to Abu Zur’ah Razi. He checked it and said, ‘I think if people lay their hands on this book, all or most of other great compiled works will become unnecessary.”
